Bassists who actually remember the sound of a Precision Bass (think Jamerson) aren’t thinking of Quarter Pound anything. The real magic of the original pickup (and Js for that matter) is that it did NOT have huge magnets and they didn’t have what some call “booster magnets”, which are bar magnets glued to the back of a coil with dummy steel poles. The secret to that magic was a pickup that was wound for full frequency response, that’s a given, but it’s the “dual” pole magnet system, one pole for each string. “No big deal” right? Wrong! As the string is plucked, it “moves” the magnet facing the ceiling first and then “moves” the magnet facing the floor. This gives the pickup an attack and vibrancy unmatched by bar magnets or a boosted, bar magnet structure. Over the last 50 years we’ve “upgraded” basses to hotter pickups and maybe the clients should have been thinking simply “better” pickups instead?
Below is an image of an original P bass pickup taken out of an original Precision Bass (that has been in a flood and swarm of locusts) shown with the brass shielding plate. You will also see a “boosted pickup” and a high BMI (Body Magnet Index) pickup.
Black pickup covers are included and you may swap out with any standard P pickup cover in a color of your choosing.
AlNiCo V pole pieces for full frequency response and good output without sacrificing detail.
Black gloss covers are included
